August's Sermons

Church Period: Epiphany 4th Sunday After
Sermon Title: Jesus Is Lord.
Sermon Date: January 31, 1965
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Matthew 8:23-27

Dear Christian friends:

In the Bible there are many names for Jesus: Savior, King, Master, Teacher, Great Physician, Light of the World, Bread of Life, Prince of Prince, King of the Jews.

We need many names for Jesus because He is such a great and wonderful person. Each name tells a little bit more about Him. Our text today has another name for Jesus: "Lord."

The deaf sign, "Lord" like this: (sign for Lord). That is a good sign. Today it often means landlord owner of our apartment or house which we rent. But "Lord" is much more wonderful than that. It means "Ruler" whom we respect and love.

Our text today shows that:

Jesus Is Lord.

Often we forget this and have lots of worrying and trouble. "Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm." (Matthew 8:26) John Glenn's space trip was postponed several times because of cloudy weather. All the wisdom and skill of the USA couldn't move the clouds. But here Jesus in a few moments commands the wind and it obeys.

There are other cases of Jesus' power or Lordship over nature: Turning water into wine, multiplied bread and fish to feed 5,000 people.

Jesus ruled over sickness: Blindness, deafness, palsy, leprosy, etc. He commands sickness and it leaves.

Jesus also ruled over death: Lazarus brought back after being dead four days, raised Jairus' twelve year old daughter.

These are just a few of Jesus' wonderful works by which He shows that He is Lord over all of nature. Yes, Jesus is Lord. Thats very plain and very true. But is He your Lord?

We are often like the disciples in the boat. They forgot or they did not believe that Jesus was their Lord. "Ye of little faith why are you afraid?" We should not be if Jesus is really our Lord. He has all power over all things. A ruler over all.

He loves us. Even though we sin against Him often and fail Him. Yet, He loved us and died for us and continues to have mercy on us and forgives us. He who is Lord is also our Savior. He rules over you in love and mercy. Don't be afraid of anything. Jesus is your Lord if you believe in Him.

If Jesus is your Lord then you will also gladly follow Him and obey Him. You will not say "No" to Him. If we say "No" to Jesus that shows that we have not yet really accepted Him as our Savior and Lord.

Think of Paul: "Lord, what do you want me to do? Jesus told him, "Go preach My name to the gentiles." Paul obeyed and did that.

Jesus, your beautiful, wonderful Savior and Lord says the same to you, "Go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature." (Mark 16:15) "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:" Matthew 28:19)

If you say "No!" to missions and other church work, is Jesus really your Lord?

"If you love Him, why not serve Him?
If you love Him, why not serve Him?
If you love Him, why not serve Him?
Soldiers of the cross."
Hymn - We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder

To every lost soul Jesus says, "Come to Me!; (Matthew 11:28)To every believing soul Jesus says, "Go for Me!" If you have come to Jesus and accepted His love and forgiveness then you will also arise and go for Him and obey Him.

Our text beautifully shows that Jesus is Lord. But each one of us needs to examine our heart and ask, Is Jesus really my Lord. Do I believe in Him? Do I love Him? Do I obey Him? How you keep your pledge will tell.

Amen.
