Sermon Title: Can We Be Sure About Jesus?
Sermon Date: February 11, 1973
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: 2 Peter 1:16-21

Dear Christian friends:

Not many people deny that there was a man named "Jesus of Nazareth." They all agree that He lived 1900 years ago and was a wonderful teacher of God's way that we all love one another. They also agree that He got crucified and died and was buried.

But they do not believe that He was born of a virgin, that He is God's only great Son; that He died for our sins, and that He arose from death, and ascended into heaven. What do you think? Is Jesus really God's Son?

Can We Be Sure About Jesus?

I. Indeed we can for we have the writings of the twelve apostles who were eye-witnesses of His glory.

1. Pete refers to the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain.

A. Saw His glory
B. Saw Moses and Elijah
C. Heard the voice of God say, "This is My beloved
Son in Him I am well pleased.

II. We have even more sure proof in the writings of the prophets in the Old Testament.

A. Often people think the Old Testament is not important. Really deny Christ who think so.

Martin Luther said the Old Testament was more important than the New Testament. Both teach the same thing: One prophesies the other fulfills. Same God, same Savior in both.

One Easter afternoon two disciples walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus talking about Jesus' death on the cross and what women said about the angel at His grave. Jesus joined with them and asked what are you talking about as you journey so sadly? Haven't you heard? "What thing?" Jesus "About Jesus of Nazareth etc. ..." Jesus says to them, "O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that Christ suffer these things and enter into His glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them in all the scriptures these things concerning Himself."

See Isaiah 53, Genesis 3:15, Genesis 49:10, Deuteronomy 18:15, Psalm 22, Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 53, Jeremiah 33:14, Micah 3:1

Genesis 3:15 "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."

Genesis 12:1-3 "The Lord had said to Abram. Go from your country and your family and your father's house to the land I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of earth shall bless themselves."

Genesis 49:10 "The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the rulers staff from between his feet until He comes to whom it belongs; and to Him shall be the obedience of the people."

Deuteronomy 18:15 "The Lord your God shall raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren - Him you shall heed."

Psalm 22 Here Jesus speaks through David 1000 years before He was crucified and tells how He will feel while hanging on the cross, verses 1-21. Verses 22-31 prophesy how Jesus will be preached to all nations and of His glory.

Isaiah 7:14 "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel."

Isaiah 9:6-7 "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder, and His name shall be called "Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and of peace there will be no end, upon the throne of David, and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and for evermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this."

Isaiah 53 Tells of the great shame and suffering of; Jesus He did not complain - He suffered for us, because of our sins; God put our sin and shame on Him. Then God highly exalted Him and honored Him, verse 12.

Jeremiah 33:14 "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days I will cause a righteous Branch to spring forth from David; and He shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Jacob will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name to which it will be called: The Lord, is our righteousness."

Micah 5:2 "But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be Ruler in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient days."

Malachi 3:1 "Behold, I send my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to His temple."

Prophesies of John the Baptist whom God sent to prepare the people for Jesus coming.
