August's Sermons

Church Period: Lent 4th Wednesday
Sermon Title: Jesus' Sign, The Crowing Rooster
Sermon Date: March 17, 1982
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Mark 14:66-72

Dear Christian friends:

God has given us various signs to remind us of His Word and promises: the rainbow, cross, water in baptism, the bread and wine in the Lord's Supper. In our text we find another sign which Jesus has given to us: the crowing rooster. Jesus used the crowing rooster to remind Peter of His Word and promise. Like Peter, we, too, need the sign of the crowing rooster to remind us of God's Word and promise when we are tempted. So let us consider:

Jesus' Sign, The Crowing Rooster

It is meant to awaken us from sin and turn us again to God. Roosters crow about 5:00 A.M. and awaken people. Jesus used the crowing rooster to remind Peter. (Mark 14:70,72)

We like Peter need to be awakened from sin. We have the same weaknesses that Peter had: He trusted in himself instead of God. We do the same often and do not watch and pray. He feared men more than God. We also fear people and what they say more than God. He didn't really love those other people around the fire. We often don't either. We are really sad that we often are ashamed of Jesus and like Peter deny Him before others.

Hymn - I Am Not Ashamed Of Him
Asham'd of Jesus! that dear friend
On whom my hopes of heav'n depend,
No! when I blush--be this my shame,
That I no more revere his name.

Thank God the rooster warned Peter. God has a crowing rooster to awaken us from the sleep of sin! The rooster crowing awakened Peter from his sin, (Mark 14:72), and he went outside and broke down and cried.

We do not have roosters in the city to awaken us and remind us. Sometimes I hear one and I ask myself, "Have I denied Jesus like Peter?" But you have an alarm clock that awakens you. Your alarm clock can be your crowing rooster. Also God has given you a conscience. Listen to your conscience. It's like a crowing rooster.

Listen to your conscience when it warns you of sin, and trust in Jesus and improve! Peter did. He did not despair as Judas did. Jesus suffered and died also for your sins. Believe in Him like Peter. Then confess His name before the world.

Amen.
