Sermon Title: The Feast Of The Lamb
Sermon Date: March 20, 1985
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Luke 22:7-23

Dear Christian friends:

That was a most important meeting in the upper room that first Maundy Thursday, perhaps the most important meeting in history. Jesus and His twelve disciples gathered there to eat the passover lamb. It was their last passover meal. Jesus will not eat that again and His disciples will not eat that again. Why? Because Jesus established the Holy Supper or the Lord's Supper in its place.

The old covenant now ends, and the new covenant begins! They will not eat the animal lambs anymore. In the future they will eat the bread and wine, the body and blood of the Lamb of God!

Yes, that was a most important meeting in the upper room that first Maundy Thursday. Jesus our Lord established the Holy Supper, which His people have eaten again and again since that day.

Another name for the Lord's Supper is "The Feast Of The Lamb, "The Feast of the "Lamb of God!" Today let us give attention to:

The Feast Of The Lamb

On that first Maundy Thursday, in the upper room after Jesus and His disciples had eaten the animal lamb, "Jesus took some bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of Me." Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you. But, behold, the hand of him that betrays me is with me on the table. And truly the Son of man goes and dies as God has planned: but woe unto that man that betrays Him!" And they began to ask each other which one of them will betray Him.

They all felt guilty. Not just Judas. We, too, have betrayed Jesus often! Notice! Jesus tells the disciples to eat His body and blood because now one of them will betray Him to the Jewish Council and "He will go and die as God has planned."

Tomorrow on Friday Jesus knows He must die on the cross, give His body and shed His blood to take away the sins of the world. Jesus knows that He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. Therefore, with the bread and wine Jesus gives His body and blood for them to eat and drink. Each one should eat and drink the body and blood of the Lamb of God to seal or guarantee to him God's love and forgiveness. The same way we come each individual!

In this special eating and drinking Jesus Himself comes to us and lives in our hearts. He gives us peace and love and joy. He leads us to love God and one another. As God has loved us, so we now love one another. As God has showed mercy and forgiveness to us in Jesus, so we now show mercy and forgive those who sin against us! It also opens heaven for us!

The Lord's Supper, the Feast of the Lamb of God should do that for us! If you and I come to the Lord's Supper with a honest heart and with faith that will happen to us! Some come without confessing their sins and without faith! Too bad! They do not receive a blessing! They receive a curse! So be careful for your soul and come with a honest heart and with faith to the Lord's Supper, the Feast of the Lamb of God!

We have gathered here today to remember the animal lambs and the One Chief Lamb, His blood shed for us and His body broken for us. We have gathered here to share our joy in the new covenant with our Lord. We have gathered today to remember His suffering and death through which we are joined together as brothers and sisters in our Lord. And as we come together, we share Christ Jesus with each other, we strengthen each other, and we unite ourselves together in the bond of faith.

O Christ, Thou Lamb of God, have mercy on us and grant us Your peace.

Amen.
