Sermon Title: What Can We Learn From The First Home?
Sermon Date: May 12, 1957
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Genesis 3:8

Dear Christian friends:

Kathy tells her mother: "Why must I always wash dishes: that's what mothers are for." Often people have that idea mothers and of the home in general a place to eat and sleep. But our text shows what a real home is more than that. It tells about the first home: Adam and Eve's Home.

What Can We Learn From The First Home?

That a home should be a little taste of "paradise", heaven. Adam and Eve heard the voice of God walking in the garden. (verse 8) Heaven is a sweet communion with God, praising Him for His goodness, loving, and trusting Him for satisfying all our needs. So our homes should have Bible reading - God talking to us. Fellowship talking of God with one another. Prayer, we talking to God.

Sin spoils the home. "Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden." They ceased the sweet, innocent communion with God and tried to get away from Him. Today many try to keep God out of their marriage and home. True, they may want a church wedding because it is stylish and they may even join a church and go to church once in a while. But they don't let God talk with them by daily Bible reading and study. They don't pray much or at all, even for food. They don't talk about God with each other. Father with mother, Father and mother with the children. No pictures of Jesus.

What's the remedy? That Jesus is the cure. Genesis 3:15 is the first promise of a Savior. True, God forced Adam and Eve out of paradise and he cursed the ground and their bodies and they must die. He did this chiefly to help them understand their sin and cause them to be sorry. So that they would seek His mercy they and their children. He was still good to them making garments and clothed them. (Genesis 3:21)

God promised a Savior. Warned Cain and a host of other people down through the years. Sent prophets and gave His written Word and sent Jesus Christ. So our troubles in marriage and the home can be blessings hidden. They humble us and remind us of our sinfulness. Trouble in childbirth, (verse 16) Thorns and thistles, sweat of brow, (verses 17-19). All should remind us of our sin. That we hurry to God for mercy.

We should not be angry at Him or think Him unfair. Not despair, but believe that our Lord Jesus Christ has taken our sin upon Himself and suffered for us: and through His cross blessed our suffering. And now all sorrow happens for our good. Let us believe in this Jesus.

So let us hear the voice of the Lord God in our homes as Adam and Eve did long ago. Read His Word! Pray, Praise! Converse of our kind and good God daily with each other.

Then one day Jesus will come again and take us to the real home above. Then God will not need to talk to us on printed paper or by letters. We will see Him as He is holy, wonderful and we will fully love, and adore Him forever and ever.

Amen!
