August's Sermons

Church Period: Lent Maundy Thursday
Sermon Title: Christ, The Bread Of Life
Sermon Date: March 27, 1975
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: John 6:1-71

Dear Christian friends:

Tonight our picture is about Christ, the True Bread. Jesus said, "I am the bread of life." (John 6:35) We all know what bread is for. It is very common. Bread supports our body-life, food for our body. Jesus is Bread for our soul, food for faith and spiritual life.

Do we appreciate that? Maybe we are like the Jews in our text; they were more interested in bread for the body than "bread" for their soul. So we need the reminder that our picture announces:

Christ, The Bread Of Life

Like the Jews we often seek only bread for our body. (John 6:25-27) After Jesus multiplied the bread and fishes and fed five-thousand people, they tried to force Him to be their King. Jesus refused to be their King because they did not understand who He was and why He came here.

How about us? Which bread are you most interested in: Bread that spoils or the True Bread? How much time do you spend earning money and worrying about food and clothes? Many, many hours! How much time do you spend seeking Christ, the True Bread? Very little. So we need to wake up and appreciate Christ, the True Bread and seek Him.

How do we seek Christ, the True Bread? When we hear about Jesus, that He is the Son of God and our Savior who died for our sins. "And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. (John 6:35) Accept Jesus and believe in Him. "And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:40) "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life." (John 6:47)

Believe what? That He came from heaven. (John 6:38,41) Believe that He died on the cross for forgiving our sins. (John 6:51-57 Lord's Supper) Believe that He Ascended into heaven and will come again in glory to raise us to life eternal.

Amen.
