August's Sermons

Church Period: Pentecost 10th Sunday After
Sermon Title: Jesus Teaches Us To Pray
Sermon Date: August 1, 2010
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Luke 11:1-13

Dear Christian friends:

One day a preacher asked a little boy "Do you pray before eating in your family?"

In our text, which is the Gospel Lesson for this Sunday, Jesus teaches us to pray much and often.

Jesus Teaches Us To Pray

It's okay for us to pray to God. Because we are sinners we may feel ashamed and afraid to pray to God, who is holy and our Judge. Sometimes I feel that way.

What should we do? Believe that although we are sinners God loves us and shows mercy to us because of His Son, Jesus Christ. God sent His Son to live and die for us. He has forgiven all our sins!

Let us go boldly before His throne of grace and find help in time of need! It's okay for us to pray to God! And if at first He does not answer our prayer we should not stop praying. God does that to tempt us to make strong our faith.

In our text Jesus teaches us: never give up praying. Sometimes God delays answering our prayers. Then we may have doubts that God hears our prayers and we think He doesn't care about us. But we should believe that He hears our prayer although He delays to answer our prayer.

Here in our text Jesus encourages His disciples to not give up praying. He tells them a story (verses 5-8). God loves us much more than our friends or neighbors.

Jesus promises that although God delays, He will finally answer our prayers. (read verses 9-10)

We must remember that God is much wiser than we are and He sometimes does not answer our prayers because we ask for foolish things or things that perhaps harm our soul.

Therefore, in our text, Jesus teaches us that God gives only good things to His children. Jesus explains that even we fathers and mothers know how to give good gifts to our children. (verses 11-12)

God is much more wiser than we fathers and mothers, and, therefore He knows better than we what gifts we need from Him. (read verse 13) When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He taught His disciples The Lord's Prayer. (Explain it briefly)

Here Jesus teaches us to pray. We should not feel ashamed or afraid to pray to God because He is our dear Father in heaven. We should never give up praying when God delays to answer our prayers. He does that to tempt us to continue praying. We should remember that God gives only Good things to us when we pray. The best prayer is the Lord's Prayer. Pray it daily!

Amen.
