Church Period: Sexagesima Sunday
Sermon Title: God Meets Mr. Big
Sermon Date: January 29, 1967
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 12:1-7

Dear Christian friends:

Last Sunday we saw how King David became proud and decided to build God's house without asking Him to see if that was His will. God admonished him and he was sorry and remembered that he was a servant before the Lord.

A few years later David again gets the big head and despises God's commandments. Our text this morning explains about that event in David's life and how God in mercy meets Mr. Big and helps him down to get right sized again.

All of us are much like David. And what God did for David He wants to do for you, too, if you will give attention. So let us attend to our text and consider that:

God Meets Mr. Big

Why do we get a big head? Maybe you have some answers to that question. Think about that a little bit. Save your answers and see if you are right. First, lets look at David and see why he got big-headed.

It happened to David after God gave him victory over most of his enemies and it made him very rich and powerful. David was a king. He commanded and everyone feared and obeyed him. He could have anything he wanted. His power was great. So he got the big head and thought he was above God's commandments. When he saw another man's wife that she was very beautiful he didn't care about God's commandment concerning holy marriage. He commanded the woman to come to his house and he went to bed with here.

When she got pregnant he tried to fix it and make it appear as if the husband was the father. When his plan failed he commanded his chief general, Joab, to make sure that the husband was killed in battle, and Joab obeyed.

Because of his power David got the big head. Perhaps you say, "Yes, but we don't have great power like King David; how can we get a big head? True, you are not kings, but you also have great power, riches and security. Remember, you live in the USA, the most powerful nation in all history. You can drive a V-8 Ford or Chevy with 350 horsepower. David never had that much power pulling his chariot. He perhaps had three or four horses. You can flip a switch and have instant automatic light and heat. That's much better light and much better heat than David's many slaves could make for him.

Now you can ride in a jet and fly six-hundred miles an hour. In a few years supersonic jets will bring you from New York to Los Angeles in less than two hours at 1800 miles per hour. David never rode in a jet. He never saw TV or a Cinerama movie or rockets. Each one of us living in the USA today has many times more power than David. If David got the big head, what do you have?

Yes, we in America are drunk with power. Like a man drunk with wine we want more and more, and more. We're not satisfied with one job we have two jobs or work overtime. Our wife gets a job too so we can have more money and more power. Soon we give up church and prayers and have no time for Church work and meetings. Our income increases, but our gifts to church do not increase. Often they become smaller.

Like David, young people and others break the 6th Commandment. They think, "We now have the pill, nobody will know, nobody will get hurt. Its all right." David thought nobody will know, nobody will get hurt; Its all right." But God knew. Bathsheba became pregnant and her husband got hurt. We read in the Bible: "But the thing that David had done displease the Lord." (2 Samuel 11:27) Also the sins that we do with our big heads displease the Lord and do great harm.

So God should forsake us and destroy us with our big heads. Surely David deserved that just as surely you and I deserve that.

But God in his mercy meets the Big Heads. How? He lets us be caught. David thought his sin was covered that not many knew. But God let the whole nation know it. God's Spirit put it in our Bible, and now the whole world knows it.

God sent Nathan, the prophet to meet Mr. Big Head King. Nathan told him the parable in our text about the rich man who stole the poor mans lamb and fed it to his guest. David said, "Who is that wicked man? Nathan answered, "You are the man. You stole Uriah's wife and killed him with the sword." (2 Samuel 12:7-11)

God met Mr. Big Head and made his head small. David confessed, "I have sinned." Nathan answered, "The Lord has also put away your sin, you will not die." God meets Mr. Big so He will see his sin and be ashamed and sorry and then humbly look to God for mercy and forgiveness in the Savior Jesus Christ.

How does God met you and me today? Through the sermon today God is trying to meet you. If you have any brains, you will understand and be sorry and look to Jesus Christ for mercy. Other ways God meets us Big Heads like when you get a ticket for driving too fast or other traffic violations. The traffic cop is your Nathan. When you or your daughter or son get caught with a baby and are not married; that's Nathan putting the finger on you and saying, "You are the man." Sometimes our church members when they get caught like that stop coming to church.

Don't stop coming to church because of that. Thank God you got caught. If God did not meet you and accuse you, you would continue on and on in sin and be lost in hell. Don't stay away from church because God has met you and accused you. Come and confess and receive His forgiveness.

Yes God still meets us Big Heads today. Thank and praise Him because He does. If He did not, we would all be lost.

Amen.
