Church Period: Trinity Sunday
Sermon Title: Our Wonderful God
Sermon Date: June 5, 1977
Rev. August Hauptman
Sermon Text: Romans 11:33-36

Dear Christian friends:

Let me read today's sermon text, Romans 11:33-36: “How great are God's riches! How deep are His wisdom and knowledge! Who can explain His decisions? Who can understand His ways? As the Holy Writings say:

‘Who knows the mind of the Lord?
Who can give Him advice?
Who has ever given Him anything,
That He must pay back to him?'

Because He created all things, and all things live through Him and for Him. To God give the glory for ever. Amen."

Today is Trinity Sunday. Christian churches all over the world rejoice and praise the Holy Triune God today, and we do also.

God has showed Himself to us in 3 persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, still He is ONE God. In the text St. Paul tells us that our God is very great and wonderful. And that we should be glad and thank Him because He is such a great and wonderful God and serve Him. So let us attend to our text and consider

Our Wonderful God

I. God has many wonderful attributes.

In our text Paul writes, “How great are God's riches! How deep are His wisdom and Knowledge."

God is a spirit. Jesus told the woman at Jacob's well, "God is Spirit, and we must have the Spirit's help to worship Him as we should."

God is eternal. In Psalm 90:2 we read, "Before the mountains were created, before the earth was formed, You are God without beginning or end.” God was not born and He will never die.

God is omnipresent, present in every place at the same time. God asks this question through the prophet Jeremiah, "Can anyone hide himself in secret places that I shall not see Him? Do not I fill heaven and earth?" No one can hide in secret place from God. God is in every place at the same time. He is in Rochester, New York with our Christian friends attending the Regional Conference there, and He is here with us now, too. He is in heaven and He is on earth and in every place on the earth. On Memorial Day a man wanted to be the first person to swim in both the Atlantic and the Pacific ocean on the same day. So first he swam the length of the Brooklyn bridge. Then he hurried and caught a jet plane and flew to San Francisco and swam the length of the Golden gate bridge. He did it in one day or on the same day. But he could not be in both places at the same time. But God can be in both places at the same time. Yes, God is in all places at the same time.

God is omniscient, knows everything. Jesus asked Peter, "Simon, do you love Me?" Peter answered, "Lord, You know all things, You know that I love You." God can look into our hearts and see what we are thinking. He knows if we love Him or not. He knows when we have trouble, and He knows how to help us, even before we pray.

God is holy, no sin or evil. "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord of hosts." (Isaiah 6:3)

God hates sin and evil. God told Israel, "You must be holy, because I the Lord your God am holy."

But we are not holy. We are sinners. We know it and God knows it. We can't hide that truth from God. We perhaps hide that from other people and act good, but we cannot fool God. And we should not try to hide our sin from God. Why?

Because He is also LOVE.

In 1 John 4:8-10 we read, "God is love. Here is how God showed His love for us: He sent His Son, His only Son, into the world that we can have life through Him. Here is what love is: it is not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the way by which our sins are forgiven."

So we should not try to hide our sins from God, but we should confess our sins to Him and to one another and trust His mercy and love in Jesus Christ to forgive our sins. We should not fear God's anger or punishment. True, we deserve His anger and punishment, but He has showed mercy to us and He has given His only Son to die for us. These are the wonderful attributes of God. But what wonderful work does god do for us?

II. He sends His Holy Spirit through preaching, baptism and Lord's Supper to urge us and invite us not fear or doubt, but believe and rejoice in Jesus Christ, have hope and courage. The Holy Spirit teaches us God is Triune, three-in-one.

When we hear that God is Triune God we should be very happy. The Holy Trinity shows God's wonderful love. The Father loved us and sent His Son here to live and die for us. The Son, Jesus, obeyed His Father's wish and came here to our world. He became a real man, born of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Spirit's power. He grew up and obeyed all God's law for us. And then He died on the cross for our sins and arose from death on Easter morning and then later went-up to heaven and sat down at God's right hand. Then the Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit, as we heard last Sunday, Pentecost Sunday. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher and Comforter. He helps us to believe in Jesus. He helps us to love and trust our heavenly Father. He helps us resist temptation and serve God by worship and by loving one another and helps by supporting the preaching of the Good News.

In our text St. Paul writes, "He (God) created all things, and all things live through Him and for Him.” To God give the glory for ever." We should give the glory to God. What does that mean? That means to love Him, thank Him, and serve Him. The Holy Spirit will help us to do this if we hear God's Word often and if we remember our baptism and if we come often to the Lord's Supper.

Therefore, let us today join with all Christians and praise the Holy Triune God. He is the only true God. He is a wonderful God. He is our God.

Praise God, from Him all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all people here on earth;
Praise Him in heaven, you angel groups;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Amen.
